Trump seeks pause of federal election trial to challenge immunity ruling

President Donald Trump’s legal team has requested a pause in the federal trial seeking to overturn the outcome of the election, citing a recent ruling by the Supreme Court rejecting the president’s attempt to extend his immunity from civil litigation.

The team wrote to Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia asking him to “respectfully pause the proceedings” to allow them time to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling.

The Supreme Court ruled last week that the president is not entitled to immunity from civil litigation stemming from his actions before taking office. As a result, the lawsuit filed by a group of Maryland voters can move forward. Trump’s legal team had sought a stay in that case to give it time to argue that the immunity issue should have been addressed through a longer appeals process.

The legal team has asked Judge Boasberg to pause proceedings so it can ask the Supreme Court to take the case in a “petition for certiorari” to further challenge the ruling.

The request was unopposed by Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, who is leading the case. Judge Boasberg has yet to make a ruling on the matter.
