The GOP’s impeachment inquiry starts on shaky political ground

The Republican Party’s initiation of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump is already on shaky political ground. While it was announced with much fanfare by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the vast majority of House Republicans—including even some of Trump’s most ardent defenders—have expressed extreme reluctance to pursue impeachment proceedings. This is in stark contrast to the near-unanimous support for impeachment that Democrats have voiced, as well as the strong backing from former GOP officials, including former White House chiefs of staff John Kelly and Reince Priebus. It remains to be seen whether McCarthy will be able to convince enough of his fellow Republicans to take the plunge and move forward with the impeachment process, or if the Republican Party will remain largely split on the issue.
