Missouri senator says he would torch ‘woke pornographic books’ after false claims of book burning at GOP event
Missouri Senator Mike Moon said in a Facebook video that he would burn “woke pornographic books” following false claims of book burning at a recent GOP event. Moon said, “I think we need to just start burning the books. I say we take all these woke obscene writings and burn them…And we start bringing back morality in our state and our nation.”
Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephanie Schriock quickly condemned the video, saying that burning books or engaging in censorship of any kind was “totally unacceptable and reprehensible” and urged Sen. Moon to retract his statement and apologize. Moon later posted a video admitting that his comments may have been over the top and saying that he believed burning books was “not appropriate.” He has since apologized and said that any statements to the contrary were being “taken out of context.”
